AI tool pricing changes this week: Greptile drops seats, Synthesia cuts Starter, Chroma Cloud closes

Published · Facts checked against official vendor pages on October 26, 2026 · Rankings are independent of sponsorships

Every Monday we re-read the official pricing page of every tool on ToolTier. This week we checked 146 tools and could re-verify 136 of them. Most prices held steady, but a few changes matter if you pay for them: Greptile dropped per-seat pricing, Synthesia cut its Starter plan, Chroma is shutting down its cloud service, and OpenAI has set dates to retire several audio models. Every number below comes from the vendor's own page, read on October 26, 2026.

The short version

Greptile Pro no longer costs $30 per seat. You now buy prepaid credits at $1 each, shared across the whole org.

Synthesia Starter is $19/month on monthly billing, down from the $29 we listed last week, or $14/month billed yearly.

Chroma Cloud goes read-only on November 22 and stops serving reads on December 22, 2026. Open-source ChromaDB continues.

OpenAI removes tts-1, tts-1-hd and gpt-4o-mini-tts on January 6, 2027, and the hosted whisper-1 model on February 26, 2027.

Augment Code sold Cosmos, the Auggie CLI and its Context Engine to Harness. Its plan prices are unchanged.

Greptile: from $30 per seat to $1 per credit

Greptile announced on October 22 that it is going fully usage-based. Its pricing page now lists three plans. Starter is free for one developer and includes 50 credits a month. Pro has no seat fees: you pay $1 per credit, and credits are shared across your organization, with unlimited developers and agents. Enterprise is custom and adds self-hosting, SSO and on-prem Git hosts. Until last week, Pro was $30 per seat per month with 50 credits per seat.

Greptile's billing docs list what a credit buys: a Base review costs 1 credit, a Plus review 3 and an Apex review 10, and only completed reviews spend credits. When the balance runs out, new reviews pause until you buy more or turn on automatic recharge. So cost now tracks how many PRs you review and at which depth, not how many people are on the team. A big team that opens few PRs pays less than before. A small team that runs Apex reviews on every PR can pay more.

How that compares today: CodeRabbit still prices per user, with plans at $24, $48 and $72 per user per month. Qodo has also moved to pooled credits, at $0.012 per credit on its Pro Team plan. See Greptile for the full plan details, or our free code-reviewer subagent if you'd rather run reviews inside Claude Code.

Synthesia: Starter drops to $19 a month

Synthesia's pricing page now lists Starter at $19/month on monthly billing, with a $9 first month, or $14/month billed yearly ($168 a year). Last week's check showed Starter at $29/month. Pro is unchanged at $89/month on monthly billing, with a $49 first month, or $59/month billed yearly ($708 a year).

The free Basic plan still includes 10 minutes of video, 3 survey responses and 500 credits a month, and its videos carry a Synthesia watermark. Starter removes the logo and lets you download videos. Compare it with other avatar and video tools on the Synthesia page and in our best AI video generators list.

Chroma Cloud is shutting down; open-source ChromaDB stays

Chroma announced on October 23 that it has signed an agreement to join Replit. As part of that, Chroma Cloud is winding down over 60 days. Per Chroma's timeline, the service becomes read-only on November 22, 2026, so you can no longer create, update or delete data. On December 22, 2026 it stops serving reads.

Chroma's advice is to move write workloads first, then export and validate your data, and finally remove Chroma Cloud credentials from your apps. The open-source ChromaDB project stays under Apache 2.0, and Replit says it will keep contributing to it. If you want another managed vector database, compare Pinecone, Qdrant and Weaviate, or browse all AI developer infrastructure tools. Chroma's tier is unchanged for now while we review it.

OpenAI sets retirement dates for its older audio models

OpenAI's deprecations page lists two audio changes. On October 1 it deprecated the text-to-speech models tts-1, tts-1-hd and gpt-4o-mini-tts, which leave the API on January 6, 2027. The recommended replacement is gpt-realtime-2.1-mini, priced at $10 per 1M audio input tokens and $20 per 1M audio output tokens. For comparison, gpt-4o-mini-tts is $12 per 1M audio output tokens.

Earlier, on August 26, OpenAI notified developers that whisper-1, gpt-4o-transcribe, gpt-4o-mini-transcribe and gpt-4o-transcribe-diarize will be removed on February 26, 2027. Its pricing page lists the replacements: gpt-transcribe at an estimated $0.0045 per minute and gpt-live-transcribe at $0.017 per minute, against $0.006 per minute for whisper-1. The open-source Whisper model you run yourself isn't affected. Details are on our OpenAI Realtime / TTS page.

Augment Code's agent tech moves to Harness

On October 8, Augment Code said it had sold Cosmos, the Auggie CLI, the Code Context Engine and related technology to Harness, and that the team behind them is moving there. Harness says Cosmos becomes its Cosmos Software Factory Agent. augmentcode.com is now run by Harness and leads with Cosmos. Its pricing page still lists Standard at $20/month and Business at $100/month, each a flat price for up to 50 seats with that amount of usage included. We've added a status note to the Augment Code page.

Other pricing pages we re-read and corrected

Several pages that we couldn't read before rendered fully this week, and a few showed details we had missed:

  • Krea now lists a Basic plan at $9/month ($5.25/month billed yearly) with 5,000 units, between Free and Pro ($35). See Krea.
  • Kling's own plan page now loads for us. Standard is $10, Pro $37, Premier from $92 (8,000 credits) and Ultra+ $619/month (57,000 credits). Our old $180 Ultra figure came from third-party trackers, so we've replaced it. See Kling AI.
  • Elicit prices differ for Academic and Industry users, and we had mixed the two. Academic Pro is $39/month billed yearly; Industry Pro is $49. See Elicit.
  • Claude Team now lists up to $500/month in pooled API credits. Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage, billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum. See Claude.
  • Notion Business ($20/seat) includes 1,500 Standard and 500 Select Notion credits a month. See Notion AI.
  • We now show real prices for JetBrains AI, Adobe Firefly, Recraft, Dify, Captions, Consensus, Convai, Softgen, Rork, Tavily and Qodo, whose pages wouldn't render for us before.

How we check, and what we couldn't verify

Each Monday we load every tool's official pricing page in a real browser and compare it with our listing. We only change a price when the vendor's own page shows the change. Tiers never move automatically: shutdowns and big price changes go to a human review first.

This week we couldn't confirm current prices for 10 tools, because their pages were blocked or didn't show plan prices: Meta AI, Amp, Relevance AI, Groq, Hume AI, Hailuo AI, Higgsfield, Qwen, Stability AI and Canva AI. Those listings keep their earlier check date. The changelog has the dated, sourced entries for this week's changes. If you're building agents that use these APIs, the Agent Builder pack and our free support agent prompt are model-agnostic.
