If you write code every day: an agentic editor or CLI
Cursor and Claude Code are our two S-tier picks. Cursor is the best editor-first experience; Claude Code is the strongest at long, multi-file autonomous work from the terminal and has the best subagent and hooks setup.
Watch Cursor's new pricing. New customers now buy The X Subscription, and the $8 Plus plan only includes Grok models. To get third-party models (billed separately at API prices) plus cloud agents and code review, you need Premium at $30/mo. Claude Code needs at least Claude Pro ($20/mo); it isn't on the Free plan.
Cheapest serious option
GitHub Copilot Pro is $10/mo, and Copilot Free now includes the CLI and agent mode with limited usage. Codex comes with ChatGPT Free and Go ($8/mo), so if you already pay for ChatGPT you already have a cloud coding agent that can open PRs.
Agent command centers
Devin Desktop (the renamed Windsurf) puts a Kanban-style manager for local and cloud Devin agents on top of a full IDE. Pricing didn't change with the rename: Free, Pro $20/mo, Max $200/mo, Teams $80/mo plus $40 per dev seat.
If you don't want to write code
Lovable (Pro $25/mo) and Bolt.new (Pro $25/mo) go from a prompt to a deployed app. Both have free plans. Bolt's free plan is 300K tokens a day and 1M a month. They're great for prototypes and internal tools, but harder to steer once an app gets complex. That's when graduating to Cursor or Claude Code pays off.
Make these tools better
