Best AI Agent Frameworks in 2026
Prices verified against official sites on 2026-10-15 · Rankings are independent of sponsorships
Every framework here is free and open source. What you actually pay for is model usage and, optionally, a hosted platform. The real differences are how much control you get, how fast you can ship, and whether the project is still moving. One of them, AutoGen, isn't.

Fastest to a capable agent: Claude Agent SDK
This is the same harness that powers Claude Code, packaged as a Python/TypeScript SDK. You get a production-tested agent loop with tools, subagents and MCP built in. The SDK is free; you pay Claude API usage.
Most control: LangGraph
LangGraph models agents as explicit graphs with durable state, which makes it the best fit for complex workflows, human-in-the-loop steps and recovery. The library is open source. LangSmith (observability and deployment) has a free Developer seat; Plus is $39/seat/mo, with usage billed at $1 per LSU.
Simplest primitives: OpenAI Agents SDK
Agents, handoffs, guardrails and tracing in a small, readable library. It's a good default if you're on OpenAI models and want minimal abstraction.
Multi-agent teams: CrewAI
CrewAI's role-based crews are the quickest way to stand up a multi-agent workflow. The framework is open source and the platform has a free Basic tier (Enterprise is custom). You get less fine-grained control than with graph-based options.
Avoid for new projects: AutoGen
AutoGen is now in maintenance mode and community-managed. It won't get new features. Microsoft points new users to Microsoft Agent Framework and publishes a migration guide.
Make these tools better
- Agent System Prompt Starters ($9): System prompts for inbox, research and lead agents.
